Collet remains at the helm of Les Bleus

It was expected, it’s now official: Vincent Collet will indeed be the coach of the French men’s basketball team for the Paris Olympics in 2024, which will be his fourth after sixth place in 2012 and 2016, and silver in 2021.

It was expected, it’s now official: Vincent Collet will indeed be the coach of the French men’s basketball team for the Paris Olympics in 2024, which will be his fourth after sixth place in 2012 and 2016, and silver in 2021.

The 60-year-old coach has been confirmed in his position by French Basketball Federation president Jean-Pierre Siutat, despite his disastrous 18th-place finish at the World Cup a few weeks ago. Vincent is perfectly capable of bouncing back, said the president at a press conference where he reiterated that Les Bleus’ objective would be to reach the podium for the fourth time in their history (after silver in 1948, 2000 and 2021).

Preparation and staff to be reviewed

The French team’s general manager Boris Diaw also spoke about the failure of the World Cup, pointing out that the coach was not the only one who had been in charge.he only person responsible for this rout. The players admitted that they weren’t up to scratch, that they hadn’t succeeded individually and above all collectively in meeting the expectations of a competition of this calibre. All the players, without exception, need to be self-critical.

However, the Federation will be looking for a different kind of added value on the bench to assist Vincent, while Laurent Foirest will no longer be part of the technical staff for the sake of complementarity. The Federation will also reflect on the scheduling of pre-Olympic preparation matches, following criticism of the 2023 preparation (matches against Tunisia, Montenegro, Venezuela, Lithuania, Japan and Australia).

Siutat takes note for Embiid

The Federation and the coach have also taken note of the fact that announcing the list of twelve players selected directly, without going through an expanded group to competition, was perhaps problematic. The principle will be re-evaluated, but NBA constraints (players are released only a few days before the start of preparation) don’t help matters.

Obviously asked about the case of Joel Embiid, who decided to play with Team USA after applying for a French passport, Jean-Pierre Siutat said that of course we were ready to welcome him, but we are simply taking note of his change of mind. Things are now clear, and all that remains is to get down to work in preparation for the Olympics…
