He’s one of the men the French national team has missed most in its quest for a first world title. As Fabien Galthié’s Bleus prepared for the 2023 World Cup in France, Romain Ntamack saw his dream of playing in the tournament shattered a few days earlier, in a warm-up match against Scotland on August 12. Suffering a serious injury to his left knee, the fly-half was forced to withdraw. He then had a hard time keeping up with the French.

The Stade Toulousain player was torn between his desire to see his team-mates go all the way, and his regret at not being able to take part in the match. He told Midi Olympique this Sunday, in a very frank and straightforward manner. I think it would have been harder for me if France had been world champions. It would have been hard to close the scar. And Emile Ntamach’s son try to explain how it approaches the event and the situation.

The elimination eased my regrets

I was trying to project myself onto the idea that the French were going to be champions, because it would have been complicated for me. Even if I was hoping for them to go as far as possible and lift the Cup. Clearly, if they’d been world champions, it would have been the happiest day in French rugby, but perhaps one of the worst in my life. And Romain Ntamack assumes that he is thinking of himself during this episode.

It seemed right to think about myself at a time like this. I should have been part of this team, but the injury prevented me from doing so. In any case, elimination in the quarter-finals, against South Africa, eased my regrets. That’s what we call a blessing in disguise. But I’m not sure that the Toulousain’s point of view is shared by the other players in the Tricolor XV.lore.
