Penaud, two incredible records in 2023

Bordeaux-Bègles’ summer signing Damian Penaud was the biggest Top 14 transfer of the off-season. Penaud, who scored six tries for the French national team during the World Cup despite their quarter-final elimination, came very close to equaling Serge Blanco’s record. The former Bleus full-back, who set the bar at 38 goals, readily admitted that the new UBB three-quarter will undoubtedly beat his benchmark. All the more so as he is only 27 years old. However, before he can do so, the former Clermont-Ferrand player has set two other records for himself in 2023. An inveterate try-hunter, Damian Penaud found the back of the net fourteen times on the international stage last year. No-one did better.

As well as being decisive, the Frenchman possesses qualities that have enabled him to set another record in 2023. That of being the most elusive man on the oval. In all his matches withc the XV de France, he escaped 75% of the tackles attempted to stop him! In other words, three out of four tackles against him failed. A sign that his performance was grandiose, only two of them were above 50%, and his runner-up, Georgian Aka Tabutsadze, had a relatively low rate: 57%. Third-placed All Black winger Will Jordan avoided 34% of the tackles initiated in front of him.

Fast-track acclimatization at UBB

By 2024, Damian Penaud could be breaking even more impressive records. Since his return from the World Cup, he has made an impressive debut with the UBB. In the Champions Cup, he scored twice in two starts. In the Top 14, he was even more inspired, scoring no less than seven goals in five appearances! He made a major contribution to the Girondins’ second-place finish in the league and their current run of six straight wins in all competitions.onfused.
