The VTC driver who went to the Nantes police station on Sunday morning was brought before the Nantes public prosecutor’s office on Monday, charged with voluntary manslaughter and extortion with a weapon just two days after the death of an FCN supporter not far from La Beaujoire. The initial investigation indicated that a convoy of VTCs carrying OGC Nice supporters had been attacked on the outskirts of the stadium by Nantes ultras intent on clashing with their counterparts from the Côte d’Azur. This theory is supported by the suspect, who insists he simply wanted to defend himself.

Known to policee, videos filmed from cell phones and eyewitness accounts would prove otherwise.

VTC customers racketted

A video from another VTC vehicle – initially concealed from investigators by the driver of this second car – does indeed highlight the blows inflicted, reports Nantes public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul. These images made it possible to determine that, as the VTC vehicle was taken to task, the driver was brandishing a white weapon. He pushed the assailant away and fell to the ground. While on the ground, he allegedly made his first stab. The fan then got up, tried to flee and was hit by a knife. investigators also claim to have been forced to pay their driver 300 euros each to cover the cost of repairing the damaged vehicle. The suspect was still in possession of the knife that caused the tragedy. The weapon has not yet been found.
