AC Milan came from behind to defeat Cagliari 4-1 in the last 16 of the Italian Cup on Tuesday evening, and the Rossoneri owe it all to Theo Hernandez.

The France team’s left-back was one of the few key players lined up by Stefano Pioli, who left Mike Maignan and Olivier Giroud on the bench and Yacine Adli in the starting line-up. And the former Real Madrid player put in a first-class performance, with two assists for Luka Jovic.

A fantastic rush

Theo Hernandez first delivered an excellent cross for his Serbian striker (29th). Then, the French international produced the kind of rush he’s always known for, setting up Jovic after a 60-metre run with the ball at his feet (40th).

In the second half, AC Milan hit the nail on the head with a goal from young Chaka Traoré (50th), and the first goal in almost two months from Rafael Leao (90th+1), who had come on as a substitute. Cagliari had reduced the deficit through Paulo Azzi (88th).

AC Milan continue their Italian Cup campaign with a trip to Empoli in Serie A on Sunday (12:30 p.m.).
