Varane, the two-faceted decision

Raphaël Varane’s situation is currently clear, but the Frenchman’s potential future with Manchester United remains ambiguous. Under contract with his club until June 2024, the defender has learned that his management do not, however, wish to activate the option of a further year linked to his contract. Nevertheless, if the Frenchman so wishes, negotiations on an extension are not impossible.

According to Dailymail, United are determined to drastically reduce their wage bill. To achieve this, they would not rule out renegotiating with Raphaël Varane. To put it plainly: if the defender wants to stay, he’s welcome to, but he’ll have to agree to lower his salary on his next contract. If he doesn’t really want a gesture, then he can leave. Varane is free to leave in June, and can negotiate with the club of his choice from January 1.

Discussions to come

The English media also states that Discussions between the two parties are due to start in January. Used sparingly by Erik ten Hag, there is nothing to suggest that Raphaël Varane is really inclined to continue an adventure that has so far failed to deliver any satisfaction. The 30-year-old defender could find a way out during the winter mercato, or at the end of the season at the latest. Unless an agreement can be reached.
